About our cause
The Chadwell Heath South Residents' Association was formed to protect the interests of residents and to deliver projects in the neighbourhood that have emerged from identifying local need. Since 2017, we have been at the forefront of inspiring change in Chadwell Heath.
We need your help for our three major Community Projects:
(i) EMBASSY CINEMA: THE RESTORATION PROJECT
The acquisition and restoration of the former Embassy Cinema is our most defining project to date. Built in the 1930s, it is one of the last remaining Art Deco cinemas left in Redbridge.
Our intention is to faithfully restore the building back into a cultural venue; an independent arthouse cinema with the capacity to present new release and repertory films, alongside performing and live arts, with café bar facilities and a reinstated Compton cinema organ.
The Embassy Cinema would once again be the epicentre of Chadwell Heath's district centre; a highly-regarded landmark that is stewarded by the local community, for the local community.
The cultural provision of our area has deteriorated and a community-led regeneration project of this nature can attract major investment opportunities in retail, residential, leisure and community spaces across Chadwell Heath. Thus leading to increased employment, an evening economy, a rejuvenated community asset, social cohesion and access to the Arts and culture that is highly desired by residents in this part of East London/West Essex.
The project also complements Barking & Dagenham Council's plans to create a new film studio, and would make use of the benefits that the forthcoming Elizabeth Line will bring; redefining the image of our area as being a home for British Film.

(ii) BRONZE STATUE TO COMMEMORATE LANCE CORPORAL JOHN WILLIAM SAYER VC
John William Sayer, a Lance Corporal during the First World War - in the 8th Battalion, The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) - received a Victoria Cross posthumously; the highest and most prestigious award for valour in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Sayer has been cited for having a great impact in holding back the German offensive at Le Verguier, in France, during Operation Michael. Yet his last stand at Shepherd’s Copse is virtually unknown to the public.
We are working to commission a life-size bronze statue of Lance Corporal John William Sayer VC, to stand in a prominent position in our Community Garden on the corner of Wangey Road/Cedar Park Gardens. We believe that L/Cpl Sayer is a true local hero, and spreading knowledge of his significant actions during the Great War will undoubtedly inspire Redbridge residents - a tribute to one of Chadwell Heath's famous sons at the site of his former home.

(iii) STATION ROAD MURAL
We wish to create a permanent mural, painted along the entire walls of Station Road, depicting famous figures, symbols, local landmarks and historic scenes of Chadwell Heath.
Good public art exists to enrich our everyday lives. This mural can help the public understand what makes Chadwell Heath so special and why it should be cherished, perhaps leading to greater respect for our town and its amenities.
We are inspired by the regular art installations at Gloucester Road Station, David Gentleman’s murals at Charing Cross Station, the tile murals at Hyde Park Corner Subway depicting the history of the area, Tottenham Court Road Station’s permanent installation by Daniel Buren and mosaic by Eduardo Paolozzi, Aliza Nisenbaum’s mural at Brixton Station and ‘The Bower of Bliss’ by Linder for Southwark Station.
The upcoming Elizabeth Line has been dubbed the ‘Culture Line’, and commissions for the Crossrail Art Foundation’s new public art programme (at seven stations in the Central London section) have already been agreed. However, nothing has been planned in our section of East London, and this community project is seeking to change that.
